Located about a 90 minute drive South/West of Townsville, Charters Towers is an old day gold mining city dating back to 1871. On the back of the boom that followed the chance discovery of gold, Charters Towers was at one point the second largest city in Queensland.
From a 25,000 population, residents have fluctuated over the years and with the cessation of most mining following the first world war. Home now to just under nine thousand people, the town once known as the ‘world’ because it had everything man could want for, is quietly living life … the way most locals like it.
