The area was originally named ‘Flooding Creek’ when settle in 1844. This is descriptive of the landscape in the day with a punt having to be used to crossed the Latrobe River, until such time as a permanent bridge was constructed. The Gold Rush in the 1850’s meant that the region benefited from the Railways arriving. This brought a rise in population and created a demand for a Courthouse, Hotels, Shops and a Church.
In 1965, gas was discovered off the coast and to this day, is pump to the Sale area through 700km of undersea pipes, where it is converted to LPG and Ethane. Sale is also home to the RAAF base, from which the Roulettes Aerobatic Team hale. In 2008, the base became the location for the Air Force’s Officer Training School (OTS).
Today, Sale faces a declining population, supported mainly by the RAAF base, its employees and their families as well as the surrounding farms.
