Although first settled almost 150 years ago, events such as the completion of the Kuranda Railway in 1891 and the cyclone that destroyed the town in 1911 meant that the area did not really boom until the 1980’s, when the infamous Christopher Skase developed the Sheraton Mirage Hotel.
Today Port Douglas is the marina for many of the cruises and day trips that head out to explore the Great Barrier Reef. One of the most beautiful places on earth is sitting in the local yacht club as the sun sets, watching the many boats returning from their days excursions. At 5pm each night a fresh Tuna carcase is offered to the resident Groper, who can be seen trying to wrestle the meal from the hands of the brave staff who feed him.
Port Douglas now has a great range of accommodation including luxury resorts and spas such as the Sea Temple Resort & Spa.
